Blood Collection and Mailing Instructions

Ensuring accurate results starts with a good sample. Follow these simple steps to collect and send your poultry DNA samples to Bird Nerd Genetics. We've made it easy for even the newest "bird nerd" to get it right!

Step 1 : Prepare for Blood Sample Collection 

  • Cut a 2" piece of clean coffee filter into a triangle shape before you start the blood collection process. (You do not need this much blood but it gives room to hold the filter without touching the blood spot.)
  • Sterilize the nail clippers by wiping with an alcohol wipe or dipping it in rubbing alcohol.            
  • *Repeat this step between birds if collecting multiple samples.
  • Wash hands and/or put on disposable gloves to prevent sample contamination.
  • *Wash hands or change disposable gloves in between birds if collecting multiple samples.
  • If possible, choose a toe nail that is a bit smaller and thinner, so it’s less stressful for the bird.
  • Clean the chosen toenail with an alcohol wipe to remove any dirt or debris.

Step 2 : Collect the Blood Sample

  • Hold the bird steady, and clip the toenail just below the quick.
  • Allow a small drop of blood to form, you can squeeze the toe gently if needed.
  • Touch the blood drop near one pointed edge of the coffee filter, it is best if you can collect 2 drops of blood.
  • *Do not touch the blood with anything but the coffee filter and do not touch the blood spot on the coffee filter.
  • Dip the birds toenail in the Styptic powder (cornstarch or flour also work well) for a moment or two, pull it out, and hold it for a minute so the powder can stop the bleeding.
  • Allow the blood spot to air dry completely for at least 30–60 minutes. You can place the coffee filter on a clean, dry surface out of direct sunlight, away from moisture and any possible contaminants.
  • *Do not stack samples, cover them while drying, or use artificial heat sources to speed the drying process as excessive heat may damage the DNA.
  • Once fully dry, place the piece of coffee filter into a small ziplock bag.
  • *Each birds blood sample requires their own bag, do not mix samples from different birds in the same bag.
  • Blood samples can be stored in a dark place at room temperature for up to 2 weeks before mailing, if needed.

Step 3 : Label and Mail Your Samples

  • Clearly label each bag in permanent marker with the birds species and an identifier like a name, band color or number and/ or detailed description (how you will personally identify the bird after testing).
  • Place the labeled bags with the into an envelope for mailing.
  • Include a piece of paper with your information in the envelope - please include your first and last name, phone number, email address and invoice number or simply include a copy of your invoice in the package.
  • Once you have placed your order, you will be provided with our mailing address.
