Feather Collection and Mailing Instructions

Ensuring accurate results starts with a good sample. Follow these simple steps to collect and send your poultry DNA samples to Bird Nerd Genetics. We've made it easy for even the newest "bird nerd" to get it right!

Step 1 : Prepare for Feather DNA Sample Collection

Wash hands and/or put on disposable gloves to prevent sample contamination.
*Wash hands or change disposable gloves in between birds if collecting multiple samples.
Locate the area you wish to pull the feathers from (the chest area usually works best).
*Avoid feathers with dirt, debris, or signs of damage and do not touch the tips of the feathers.

Step 2 : Collect the Feathers

Hold the feather(s) close to the skin and pluck it swiftly and firmly to minimize stress and discomfort.
*If using tweezers, ensure you clean them with alcohol before each bird to prevent contamination.
Pick 3-5 feathers or more, (from multiple locations is fine) it is preferable to send more feathers in case repeat analysis is required.
*Feathers must have the root (pulpy flesh) intact - this is where the DNA is extracted from.
Feathers must be freshly picked. Fallen feathers (molting feathers) cannot be used.
Place the plucked feathers into a small ziplock bag.
*Each birds feathers require their own bag, do not mix samples from different birds in the same bag.
Collected feathers should be stored in the freezer if not mailing the same day.

Step 3 : Label and Mail Your Samples

Clearly label each bag in permanent marker with the birds species and an identifier like a name, band color or number and/ or detailed description (how you will personally identify the bird after testing).
Place the labeled bags with the into an envelope for mailing.
Include a piece of paper with your information in the envelope - please include your first and last name, phone number, email address and invoice number or simply include a copy of your invoice in the package.
