Common questions about poultry DNA testing

At Bird Nerd Genetics, we understand you want the best for your flock. That's why we're dedicated to providing accurate, reliable, and friendly service. Below, you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about our DNA sexing and genetic testing services.

How does it work?

Simply collect DNA (feathers or blood) from your bird by following the detailed instructions provided, place your order and mail the samples to us.

How do you test the DNA?

We use a technique called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify specific regions of your birds DNA to identify specific genetic markers that determine male or female or the presence of certain genetic testing traits.

How accurate are your DNA tests?

Our DNA tests boast a high level of accuracy, often exceeding 99% as long as there is no contamination at the time of the DNA sample collection. We use robust scientific methods and quality control to ensure reliable results, giving you confidence in the information you receive about your flock.

How old does a bird need to be for testing?

We can test at any age — even day-old chicks.

Feather testing is easiest for older chicks but as long as you can pull 3-5 small body feathers (not chick fluff) with the root (pulp) attached, we can extract DNA. Breast feathers or the small feathers along the top of the wing usually work well.

*For very young chicks and young silkies that don't have real feathers yet, blood samples work best.

What species can you test?

We currently offer DNA testing for chickens and will be adding testing for ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, peafowl, emu and parrots very soon! If you have a specific bird in mind, please contact us at [[email]] to confirm.

What area(s) do you service?
